In August 2004, we published a new edition of this book entitled
Murach's Mainframe
COBOL. It focuses on COBOL as its used in IBM mainframe
shops because thats where almost all COBOL programming
is done. So unless youre a student who needs Murachs
Structured COBOL for a class, we recommend that you get a copy of Mainframe COBOL instead.
If you are using Structured COBOL for a class
or if
you already have a copy of this edition
you can use the links
on this page to get any additional information or downloads
that you need.
Murachs Structured COBOL was designed so that
you could practice using COBOL on your own PC using a PC-based
compiler if you wanted to. However, the PC compiler thats
illustrated (Micro Focus Personal COBOL) is no longer available;
its been replaced with a compiler known as Micro Focus
Net Express. The good news is that the COBOL code works the
same for both Personal COBOL and Net Express, and the interface
and development tools are similar.
So if you want to work with COBOL on a PC as you read
our book, one option is to get Net
Express 5.0. This product is available is available
directly from us or from Micro Focus.
To make it easier for you to use Net Express with our
book, weve developed two downloadable
PDF documents. The first document is a tutorial
that shows you how to edit, compile, test, and debug
COBOL programs with Net Express; you can use it in place
of chapter 2 in the book. The second document presents
the exercises that are in the book with specific instructions
for the users of Net Express.
