What software you need
Software option #1: Full editions of Visual Studio 2010
To develop database applications with ADO.NET 4 and VB 2010, you can use any of the full editions of Visual Studio 2010:
- Professional Edition
- Premium Edition
- Ultimate Edition
All of these come with everything you need, including the Visual Studio development environment, version 4 of the Microsoft .NET Framework, Visual Basic 2010 (and C# 2010), a built-in web server that's ideal for testing ASP.NET applications, and a scaled-back version of SQL Server called SQL Server Express.
Software option #2: Free editions of Visual Studio components
You can also download three Express editions of Visual Studio components from Microsoft's web site to develop the applications in this book:
- Visual Basic 2010 Express Edition
- Visual Web Developer 2010 Express Edition
- SQL Server 2008 Express Edition
All of these products are free. And together, they provide all of the components you need to develop the applications for this book.
If you use Visual Basic 2010 Express Edition with this book, you should be aware that this edition doesn't include the ability to create local reports as shown in chapter 16. But apart from that, the Express Edition has only a few minor differences from the retail editions. The good news is that all the other projects in this book can be created with the Express editions, and all the skills you learn and applications you develop with the Express editions will work with any of the full editions of Visual Studio 2010.
