Software option #1:
Full editions of Visual Studio 2008
To develop database applications using C# 2008, you
can use any of the full editions of Visual Studio 2008,
including the Standard Edition, Professional Edition,
or Team System. All of these come with everything you
need, including the Visual Studio development environment,
version 3.5 of the Microsoft .NET Framework, C# 2008
(and Visual Basic 2008), a built-in web server that's
ideal for testing ASP.NET applications, and a scaled-back
version of SQL Server called SQL Server Express for
database handling.
Software option #2:
Free Express editions of Visual Studio components
You can also download Express editions of Visual Studio
components from Microsoft's website to develop the applications
in this book:
- C# 2008 Express
- Visual Web Developer 2008 Express (if you want to
run the ASP.NET sample applications in chapters 15
and 20)
Both of these products are free, and both of them give
you an option to install SQL Server 2008 Express. So
together, they provide all of the components you need
to develop the applications for this book.
Please note, though, that these Express editions are
scaled-back versions of what you get in the full editions
of Visual Studio. That's why you'll find that some of
the user interfaces are simpler than the ones in our
book, which are all based on the Professional Edition.
Nevertheless, these are terrific products for gaining
the programming skills you need to work with ADO.NET
3.5, LINQ, and the Entity Framework. And both the applications
and skills that you develop using these Express editions
will work with any of the full editions of Visual Studio
2008.
