What software you need
To run the web applications shown in this book, you need to have the following software installed on your computer:
- the Apache web server
- the MySQL database server
- PHP
All of this software can be downloaded and installed for free in a single download called XAMPP. Appendix A in the book shows how to do that for Windows, and appendix B shows how for Mac OS X.
To develop and test the web applications shown in this book, we recommend the following software:
- a text editor (we recommend Notepad++ for Windows users and TextWrangler for Mac OS users)
- a standards-compliant web browser (we recommend Mozilla Firefox)
- an Integrated Development Environment (we recommend the NetBeans IDE for PHP)
Again, all of this software can be downloaded for free, and the appendixes show you how to install these development tools on a PC or a Mac.
