Who this book is for
Since 1977, the earlier editions of this book have helped many thousands
of COBOL programmers work smarter, faster, better, and with less frustration.
Likewise, this edition is for individual programmers who want to work in
a more satisfying way. The only prerequisite is that you know COBOL. (If
you don't know COBOL, we recommend you get Murach's
Mainframe COBOL instead. It will teach you structured development methods
as it teaches the COBOL language itself.)
If you're a programming or project manager who realizes that all
isn't well in your shop, this book can provide some solutions for you,
too. First, when you hire inexperienced trainees, this book will give them
some of the real-world perspective they need. Second, if your current development
standards are unwieldy (or non-existent), this book can be an instant standards
manual. We've deliberately cut out any picky details so the focus is
on the critical skills that profit you most.
