Murach's Oracle SQL and PL/SQL
This is the Oracle edition of our SQL text that's become popular with
instructors...and their students...over the last 5 years.
If you cover Oracle in a SQL course or as part of a
database course, I hope you'll request a review copy.
Here are 3 major ways this book differs from other Oracle SQL texts:
1) This book assumes your students are using the new Express Edition of Oracle Database that's available for free download from Oracle's website. That means there's no extra charge for software. Appendix A shows students how to install the Express Edition on their own PC.
2) Starting in chapter 2, this book shows your students
how to use Oracle SQL Developer to work with databases.
This new graphical tool is far easier to use than command-line
tools like SQL*Plus, and your students will probably
be using it (or something similar) in the workplace.
Yet most Oracle books don't cover it.*
3) This book begins by showing your students how to query a database. That's what most developers need to know first, and it gets your students motivated as they see the results of their code right away. Once they know how to work with SQL, they'll learn how to design databases, and they'll have a better feel for how their design choices can affect performance.
*Note: You can't use SQL Developer to connect to versions of Oracle Database that are prior to version 9.2.0.1. In that case, you may want to use SQL*Plus, which is briefly described in chapter 2.
Training aids in the book itself: Practice exercises
Training aids available in our Downloads section: Scripts for all the SQL and PL/SQL code presented in the book; Scripts for creating the users, schemas, and tables that are used in the book examples
Instructor's CD
The Instructor's CD for this book includes these materials:
- Instructional objectives for each chapter of the book
- Test banks in ExamView, Blackboard, and RTF formats
- Solutions to the chapter exercises in the book
- PowerPoint slides for classroom presentations
- Source code for all the examples in the book
For a detailed look at these materials and how you can use them in your course, please view the Instructor's Summary that we've prepared (it's a PDF document). Then, if you like what you see, you
