Murach's C++ 2008
This C++ book is written by Prentiss Knowlton, an instructor who's been teaching Visual C++ and C# courses in the UCLA Extension program for years. In fact, he came to us because he enjoyed using our C# book so much that he wanted to do a similar book for C++.
Pren believes that Visual Studio is a great tool for teaching the C++ language, even for students who want to learn native C++ rather than Visual C++. That's because it allows students to avoid the frustrations of trying to code C++ from the console. They can focus on language essentials instead of misplaced semicolons and the like.
As a result, we believe you can use this book for any type of introductory C++ course. And because the OOP section is so strong, you'll find it works well for object-oriented programming courses as well.
One final note: Because native C++ code runs without any modifications in the .NET environment, the last chapter shows (1) how to edit, run, and enhance legacy programs with Visual Studio and (2) how to incorporate C/C++ code into new applications under .NET. It's fascinating to see code that's been in existence longer than a lot of students…and still runs perfectly on a platform that it wasn't written for.
