Today, most professional COBOL programmers are working in IBM mainframe
shops. So if you don't already have a copy of Murachs Structured
COBOL, we recommend that you get a copy of Murachs
Mainframe COBOL instead.
If you do have a copy of Structured COBOL, however, you'll find that several of the chapters introduce IBM subjects that are covered more fully in our other
books:
Chapter 18, on how to use JCL to compile and test your programs on an
IBM mainframe running under the MVS operating system, is just a small subset
of all you can learn about job-control language in Murachs
OS/390 and z/OS JCL.
Chapter 18 also shows you how to use the MVS text editor, ISPF, to develop
your programs. You can learn more about ISPF and the TSO commands that underlie
it in MVS TSO, Part 1 and Part
2.
Chapter 19 introduces you to coding interactive programs on an IBM mainframe
using CICS, a subject thats treated fully in Murachs
CICS for the COBOL Programmer.
Likewise, chapter 20 introduces you to database programming using DB2,
the subject of DB2 for the COBOL
Programmer, Part 1 and Part
2.
