"I first read the 2005 version of both Murach's
C# and VB books and loved them. I said then, and say
again, if I were to teach a VB or C# class, I would
use these as textbooks. They are complete, but pleasant
to read (unlike lots of textbooks.) "Murach
has updated these books to include the 2008 topics.
I dug into the C# book recently because I was doing
some interesting things with Microsoft's new Dynamic
Data technology which makes much use of Partial Classes.
It's fully up-to-date with the 2008 stuff!"

"The book targets beginners to experienced developers
in Java/C++/VB/.NET, along with being useful for training
and reference. I'm a little skeptical when a book tries
to be all things to all people, but the author does
a great job. The 'paired page' format really helps with
this because you can read the most appropriate page
(or both) for you at the time. I'm a Java developer.
While I was able to skim some sections, I was never
bored.
"I particularly liked
the focus on idioms and skills. There were a lot of
'how to do ________' examples along with techniques
such as refactoring. The end-of-chapter exercises were
also great."
Jeanne Boyarsky, JavaRanch.com
"This is probably the best introductory book I've seen on programming .NET. It assumes nothing, but gets straight to the point, with no pandering. It explains everything in detail, but never wastes time sugar-coating anything."
