Learning how to develop Java servlets and JavaServer
Pages (JSPs) has typically required the use of several
books as well as online tutorials and the Java documentation.
But now, if you have the basic Java skills presented
in Murach's Beginning Java
2 or Murach's Java SE
6, you can master all the skills that you need to
develop Java web applications by reading just this one
book.
Why you'll learn faster and better
with this book
When we started writing this book, we knew we had to
take a new approach if we wanted to teach you Java web
programming in a way that's faster and better than the
other books. We're so confident that this approach has
worked that we've made chapters 1 through 5 available
as free downloads. So don't take our word for it, download
chapters 1 through 5 now!
What you'll learn in this book
If you look at the table of contents
for this book, you'll see that it teaches all the skills
you need to develop almost any type of Java web application.
The chapters in this book gradually move from the simple
to the complex as they show you how to work with
- the Tomcat servlet/JSP container
- HTML pages and forms
- JSPs, servlets, and the Model 2 architecture
- sessions and cookies
- JavaBeans
- custom JSP tags
- MySQL and connection pooling
- JavaMail
- SSL and security
- XML
- Enterprise JavaBeans (EJBs)
To complete your training, section 5 presents an e-commerce
web site that puts these skills into context. Once you
understand how this web site works, you will have all
the skills and code you need to start creating your
own custom web applications.
What's on the CD
The CD that comes with this book contains all of the
software and source code that you'll need to begin coding,
compiling, and testing Java servlets and JSPs on your
PC, including:
- The source code for all of the examples and applications
presented in this book.
- The SQL scripts for creating the databases that
are used by the applications in this book.
- The Java 2 SDK (version 1.4).
- The Tomcat servlet and JSP container (version 4.0).
- The MySQL database server software (version 3.23),
a MySQL database driver, and a Java class that implements
a connection pool.
- Trial versions of the TextPad and HomeSite text
editors (great tools for coding servlets and JSPs).
How to work with later versions of
Java and Tomcat
Since the publication of this book in February 2003,
both Java and Tomcat have been upgraded. So the versions
that are the CD are not the latest releases.
If you use the software on the CD, everything in
the book works without any changes. However, if
you want to use later versions of the software, please
take at look at the upgrade
information we've provided. Here, you'll find chapter-by-chapter
summaries that detail any changes you need to make to
the applications, examples, and exercises in the book
to get them to work with the versions of Tomcat and
Java that you're using.
How to work with later versions of
MySQL
Since the publication of this book in February 2003,
there have also been several new releases of MySQL.
With releases 4.1 and 5.0 of MySQL, the SQL scripts
on the CD no longer work properly (these scripts are
used to create the two databases used by this book).
To solve this problem, you can
download updated versions of these scripts. Then,
you can run these scripts instead of the ones that are
on the CD.
Unique format
Like all the books in the Murach series, all of the
information is presented in "paired pages," with the
essential syntax, guidelines, and examples on the right
page and the perspective and extra explanation on the
left page.
This helps you learn faster by reading less, and it
makes an ideal reference format when you need to refresh
your memory about how to do something later on.
What one satisfied customer had to
say about this book
"Trying to configure a test environment just to make
sure I had all the skills to do web apps has been like
pulling teeth from a lion. It almost seems like a conspiracy
between the web software companies and those lucky enough
to have started at the bottom with web programming to
keep the rest of us developers out of web development!
And now I see why…it's so easy when you get a book like
yours that puts it all together and doesn't shoot off
on 10-page tangents every other page."
Christian H. Eidsmoe, Software Development
Team Leader, Irvine, California
