What compilers you can use
Since this book presents standard COBOL, you can use it with any COBOL compiler that conforms to the 1985 or 2002 standards…and all of the current compilers do. In particular, this book is designed to teach you how to use the compilers for IBM mainframes.
If you want to practice on your own PC, though, we recommend that you use a software product developed by Micro Focus, Net Express 5.0. This PC-based COBOL compiler and development environment is available directly from us or from Micro Focus.
To help you get started with Net Express, you can download the two PDF documents that we’ve prepared. The first one shows you how to use the Net Express Integrated Development Environment. The second one gives you exercises that are specifically designed for use with Net Express.
