What software you need
For chapters 1 through 19 of this book, you can download all the software you need from Microsoft's website for free. That includes:
- SQL Server 2008 Express with Tools (although there are other versions of SQL Server 2008 Express, this is the one we recommend)
- Express Edition of Visual C# 2008 or Visual Basic 2008 (needed only for chapter 19)
In appendix A in the book, you'll find complete instructions
for installing these items on your PC. However, some
of the details have changed since the book was published.
So you'll want to download this PDF file to get the
changes:

Then, in chapter 2, you'll learn how to use SQL Server 2008 Express.
For chapters 20 through 22 (CLR integration), you'll need to install one of the full editions of Visual Studio 2008. Unfortunately, these editions are not available for free. However, you can download and install a 90-day trial version of these editions from the Microsoft website.
