Murach's ADO.NET 3.5, LINQ,
and the Entity Framework with VB 2008
This book is designed to teach ADO.NET 3.5 database programming to anyone who has the core skills covered in Murach's Visual Basic.
It starts off by showing how to use data sources and
other ADO.NET features for Rapid Application Development,
then covers the skills needed to create 3-layer applications
with ADO.NET code in the database classes.
That's the first half of the book, and it's very similar to the .NET 2.0 edition. But the second half of the book is all NEW.
So you get a 6-chapter section on LINQ that shows how to use LINQ to DataSet, LINQ to SQL, LINQ data sources, and LINQ to XML to handle data in VB applications. Then, there's a 4-chapter section on the Entity Framework that gives you and your trainees a practical start in creating and using Entity Data Models that map the custom business objects used by an application to the objects in a database…functionality that promises a new measure of flexibility in developing database applications.
In short, this book provides for 4 courses in one:
a prototyping course, a 3-layer development course,
a LINQ course, and an Entity Framework course. So you
can plug it into your curriculum wherever you need it.
Training aids in the book itself: Practice exercises for chapters 3-14 and 16-19
Training aids available in our Downloads section: Source code and data for the book applications (including those that are used as starting points for the exercises)
