What software you need

To develop web pages, you need:

  • a text editor (we recommend Notepad++ for Windows users and TextWrangler for Mac OS users)
  • multiple web browsers, like Mozilla Firefox, Internet Explorer, Safari for Macs, Opera, and Google's Chrome

Although you can use any text editor with this book, a text editor that includes syntax coloring and auto-formatting will help you develop applications more quickly and with fewer errors. That's why we recommend Notepad++ and TextWrangler. Both are available free, and both can be used for entering XHTML and CSS (and JavaScript, too).

As for web browsers, you need to test your web pages thoroughly with all the browsers that your site visitors use regularly. In this book, we recommend that at the least you test Firefox and Internet Explorer on Windows systems and Firefox and Safari on Mac systems.
