How to use the LockLizard Viewers

How to use the Windows viewer

The Windows Viewer lets you view the pages of our books in pairs, just as they were intended to be read. As a result, this is an excellent Viewer for reading our books, especially on computers with large screens. This Viewer also has a good search facility.

Although this Viewer is easy to use with normal Windows techniques, the instructions that follow may help you get up-to-speed with this Viewer more quickly.

How to start the Viewer and open your eBooks

  • After the Viewer has been installed and activated, a LockLizard folder will be added to the All Programs menu. To start the Viewer, you can drill down in the LockLizard folder to View Documents, and click on it. Then, you can use the Open command in the File menu to open your eBooks.
  • Another way to do this is to find the eBook that you want to read in the Windows Explorer and then double-click on it. That will open the eBook in the LockLizard Viewer.

How to set the viewing options

If your computer has a standard screen or a large screen, we recommend that you set the Viewer options so you can see both pages in a set of “paired pages” at the same time, just as you would see them in the print book. To do that,

  • Set the Page Layout option in the View menu to Facing.
  • Set the sizing option in the View menu to Fit to Page.

If those settings make the type too small for reading, you can try one of these options:

  • Close the Bookmarks panel by clicking on the rightmost button in the toolbar, and reset the View option to Fit to Page.
  • Open the pages in full screen mode by clicking the button that’s second from the right in the toolbar. To return to normal mode from full screen mode, press the Esc key.
  • Use the controls in the toolbar to Zoom in, Zoom out, or change the size of the display.
  • Set the Page Layout option in the View menu to Single.

How to use our bookmarks

  • Click on the rightmost button in the toolbar to display the bookmarks panel.
  • Then, drill down to the chapter or topic you want to read and click on it.

How to use the search feature

  • Since the search feature only works in Single Page view on 64-bit systems, you usually need to start by setting the Page Layout option in the View menu to Single Page. (Note, however, that this feature does work in Facing view on 32-bit systems.)
  • Start the search facility by clicking on the third toolbar button, selecting the Find Text command in the Document menu, or pressing Ctrl+F. That will display a dialog box for the search. Then, enter your search term in the Find What text box, and press the Enter key.
  • That will display a dialog box like this:
wiindows search boxHere, because the Show Search Results Dialog option is checked, the dialog box includes a list of all of the occurrences of the search term. Then, you can go to the page of any occurrence by clicking on the item in the list, and the term will be highlighted on that page.

Note, however, that the page numbers in this dialog box include the number of pages for the front matter. So, in this example, page 188 is actually page 172 in the book. That’s because this book has 16 pages of front matter.
  • Another way to use the search facility is to uncheck the Show Search Results Dialog option. Then, the Find Next button takes you to the next occurrence of the search term with the term highlighted. You can also set the Up or Down button to determine the direction of the search.

How to use the Mac Viewer

This is an excellent Viewer for reading our books, especially on computers with large screens, and its search facility works well. However, its double-page view puts the figure page on the left and the text for the next figure on the right, which reduces the effectiveness of our “paired pages.”

Although the Mac viewer is easy to use with normal Mac techniques, the instructions that follow may help you get up-to-speed with this Viewer more quickly.

How to start the Viewer and open your eBooks

  • To start the Viewer, find the LockLizard Viewer in the Applications folder and double-click on it. Then, you can use the Open command in the File menu to open your eBooks.
  • Another way to do this is to find the eBook in your Downloads folder and click on it, or use Finder to find the eBook and double-click on it. That will open the eBook in the LockLizard Viewer.

How to set the viewing options

  • Set the option in the View menu to either Single Page or Double Page. But note that the figure page in Double Page view is on the left, which isn’t the way our paired pages are designed to work.
  • Select the Fit Width option in the View menu. You can also use the Fit Width toolbar button to set this option.
  • If you experience a problem where the page has a white block over it or is completely covered by a plain white page, change the zoom level to 100% or any other zoom level in increments of 25%.

How to use our bookmarks

  • Click on the Toggle Outline & Search button at the far right side of the toolbar to display the Outline and Search panels. (Click the button again to hide these panels.)
  • Then, in the bookmarks panel, drill down to the chapter or topic you want to read and click on it.

How to use the search feature

  • Click on the Toggle Outline & Search button at the far right side of the toolbar to display the Outline and Search panels. (Click the button again to hide these panels.)
  • Then, in the search panel, enter a search term. That will display a list of the pages that include the search term.
  • To go to one of the pages in the list, click on it. The search term will be highlighted on that page.
  • Please note, the search option is not available for macOS Sierra at the moment. Locklizard is working to resolve this issue.

How to use the iPad Viewer

The iPad Viewer works well for reading our eBooks, and it has an excellent search feature. Although this Viewer is relatively easy to use with normal iPad techniques, the instructions that follow may help you get up-to-speed with it more quickly.

How to start the Viewer and open your eBooks

  • After the Viewer has been installed and activated, a PDCViewer icon will be displayed on the Application page of the device. Then, you can tap that icon to start the Viewer.
  • When the Viewer starts, it will list the LockLizard eBooks that have been downloaded. Then, you can tap the one that you want to open.

How to display and hide the toolbar at the top of the page and the thumbnails at the bottom

  • To display the toolbar and thumbnails, tap in the middle of a page or pair of pages.
  • To hide the toolbar and thumbnails, tap again in the middle of a page or pair of pages.

How to set the viewing options

  • To switch between single-page and paired-pages viewing, tap the third toolbar icon from the left.
  • In paired-pages view, if the text page is on the right, tap the second toolbar icon from the left. That will put the text page on the left and the figure on the right.
  • To increase the size of the text in single-page or paired-pages view, you can use normal iPad techniques, but that will only change the size in the current page or pair of pages. That size will be reset when you go to the next page or pair of pages.

How to use our Contents bookmarks

  • Tap on the Contents icon in the toolbar (the fourth one from the right) to display the bookmarks for the contents.
  • Then, drill down to the chapter or topic you want to read and tap on it. That will take you to that page.

How to use the search facility

  • Tap on the Search icon in the toolbar (the second one from the right). Then, enter a search term in the search box and press the Enter key.
  • That will highlight all of the occurrences of the term in the text and also list all of the occurrences below the search box by page number. To go to one of the occurrences in the list, tap on it. Then, to go to previous or next occurrences, tap on the arrows that appear.
  • Note, however, that the page numbers in this search box include the number of pages for the front matter. If, for example, there are 18 pages of front matter, page 268 in the search box is page 250 in the book.

How to set your own bookmarks

  • To add a bookmark to the page that’s displayed, tap on the Bookmark icon in the toolbar (the third one from the right). That will display an empty Bookmarks list. Then, tap the + sign at the top of the list. That will add a bookmark for the current page to the Bookmarks list, but you can’t add any text to it. This is a good way to mark the last page that you’ve read.
  • To go to one of your bookmarks, tap the Bookmark icon in the toolbar to display the Bookmarks list. Then, tap the bookmark for the page that you want to go to.
  • To delete a bookmark, tap the Bookmark icon to display the Bookmarks list. Then, tap Edit above the list, tap the minus sign before the bookmark that you want to delete, and tap the Delete button that appears.
  • Here again, the page numbers in the Bookmarks box include the number of pages for the front matter. If, for example, there are 18 pages of front matter, page 268 in the Bookmarks box is page 250 in the book.

How to use the Android Viewer

The Android Viewer works okay for reading our eBooks, and it has a useful search feature. Although this Viewer is relatively easy to use with normal Android techniques, the instructions that follow may help you get up-to-speed with it more quickly.

How to start the Viewer and open your eBooks

  • After the Viewer has been installed and activated, a PDCViewer icon should be displayed on the Home page of the device. Then, you can tap that icon to start the Viewer.
  • When the Viewer starts, it will list the LockLizard eBooks that have already been downloaded and opened. Then, you can tap the one you want to open.

How to display and hide the toolbar at the top of the page

  • To display the toolbar, press and hold a page until a menu appears. Then, tap Toggle Toolbar.
  • To hide the toolbar, repeat the action for displaying the toolbar.
  • When the toolbar is displayed, page thumbnails are displayed at the bottom of the screen, but they’re too small to be useful.

How to set the viewing options

  • To switch between single-page and paired-pages viewing, tap the third toolbar icon from the left. This changes the view, but also resets the book to page 1.
  • In practice, you will probably want to stay in single-page view as you read an eBook. That way, the type is larger.
  • In double-page view, the type is difficult to read without resizing it, and the figure is on the left instead of the right.
  • To change the size of the text, you can use normal Android techniques.

How to use our Table of Contents bookmarks

  • To display the bookmarks, tap on the Table of Contents icon in the toolbar (the fourth one from the left), or press and hold a page until the menu is displayed, and tap Table of Contents.
  • Then, drill down to the chapter or topic you want to read and tap on it. That will take you to that page.

How to use the search facility

  • Tap on the Search icon in the toolbar (the first one from the left) or tap on Search in the menu. Then, enter a search term in the search line that appears and press the Go key.
  • That will highlight all of the occurrences of the term in the text, starting with the first one. Then, to go to the next or previous occurrence of the term, tap the right or left arrow icon that’s to the right of the search term.
  • To hide the search term and arrow icons, tap on the Search icon in the toolbar or tap on Search in the menu.

How to set your own bookmarks

  • To add a bookmark for the page that’s displayed, tap on the Bookmark icon in the toolbar (the second one from the left) or tap Bookmarks. Then, tap Add. That will add a bookmark to the Bookmarks list, but you can’t add any text to it. This is a good way to mark the last page that you’ve read.
  • To go to one of your bookmarks, tap the Bookmarks icon in the toolbar or Bookmarks in the menu. Then, tap the bookmark for the page that you want to go to.
  • To delete a bookmark, tap the Bookmarks icon in the toolbar or Bookmarks in the menu. Then, tap the trash can icon for the bookmark that you want to delete.
  • When you’re using bookmarks, the page numbers for the bookmarks include the number of pages for the front matter. If, for example, there are 18 pages of front matter, page 268 in a bookmark is page 250 in the book.
